When a poor person dies within the barrio, funeral expenses usually are impossible to pay. Funds from Los Amigos help these families. A basic wooden coffin costing approximately  400 soles (USD $140) is purchased. Typically, the poor are buried at  San Pedro Cemetery of the Poor, as burial at other Peruvian cemeteries can cost USD $340 or more. San Pedro Cemetery of the Poor, a hill in the sand on the outside of town, is dotted with wooden crosses which mark where loved ones are buried.
